However, visitors to Bolton Castle are finding a refreshing escape from the heat as they step inside its ancient stone walls. The castle, built centuries ago, boasts thick 3ft walls that not only served to protect its former inhabitants from invaders but now provide a cool refuge from the summer sun.
Cool Castle
According to Jacqui Naylor, the General Manager at Bolton Castle, a quick poll revealed that many visitors are experiencing noticeable relief upon entering the castle.
“We took the temperature in the Solar, one of the rooms in the castle, and found it was a cool 19 degrees on a day of 28 degrees outside. The Dungeon was an even cooler 18 degrees – a perfect temperature for a prisoner!”
This surprising coolness is drawing visitors indoors, encouraging them to linger longer inside the castle rather than rushing back out into the sunshine. The castle's five floors provide plenty of space for exploration, and with visitor numbers already up month on month compared to last year, it seems that the heatwave is encouraging more people to seek shelter within the historic site. As an added treat, the castle's Tea Room team has noticed a surge in the popularity of refreshing summer treats. Ice creams and iced coffees have become best-sellers, providing a delightful way to cool down after a tour of the castle.
Historic Respite
The thick stone walls of Bolton Castle are a reminder of its historical significance. Originally built in the 14th century, the castle was designed to withstand attacks from rival factions. While its primary purpose was defence, those same walls are now giving modern-day visitors a break from the heat. "Ice wouldn’t have been available to the castle inhabitants, but at least they would have felt some relief within our walls," Naylor notes, highlighting the castle's dual purpose over the centuries.
Located in the picturesque Wensleydale area, the castle’s gardens also benefit from its location, often catching a refreshing breeze that enhances the outdoor experience. Visitors can enjoy both the cool interiors of the castle and the scenic beauty of the gardens, making it a perfect summer destination.
