|In an inspiring display of community spirit, Specsavers Kirkstall has teamed up with PureGym Leeds Kirkstall Bridge to help provide vital healthcare services. Their joint fundraising efforts have successfully raised £1,800, which has funded 48 prostate screening tests for local residents. This initiative highlights the importance of health checks and the role that community collaboration can play in improving lives.
Fundraising Efforts

The fundraising campaign spanned an entire week and featured a variety of engaging activities designed to encourage participation and donations. Among the events were:
Sponsored spin bike sessions
A cake sale
A tombola
A raffle
These fun activities not only brought the community together but also raised much-needed funds for prostate cancer screening. The money raised has enabled healthcare professionals to offer these important tests, which can be crucial in detecting prostate cancer early.
Prostate Screening Importance
Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among men, and early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes. The screening tests provided through this initiative are based on a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test. This simple blood test measures a protein produced by the prostate that can indicate the presence of prostate cancer.
A nurse from the Graham Fulford Charitable Trust (GFCT), a charity dedicated to providing prostate cancer screening since 2004, was present at Specsavers to conduct the tests. This collaboration ensured that local men could access these tests conveniently.
Community Impact
Jennie Long, the ophthalmic director at Specsavers Kirkstall, expressed her gratitude for the community's support:
“It’s incredible to know that the hard work of our amazing team, alongside the donations of everyone in the community, has helped fund 48 prostate screening tests.”
She also extended a heartfelt thank you to all the contributors and to GFCT for facilitating the testing.
Graham Fulford, founder of GFCT, highlighted the simplicity and speed of the PSA test:
“The PSA test is quick and straightforward. It’s a simple blood test with a professional phlebotomist, with no physical examination required, and most men are in and out within minutes.”
Fulford added that for many men, receiving their test results can provide reassurance, while for others, it may lead to further investigations if necessary.
