The nose is a luscious blend of spice and tea with just a hint of peppermint. The palate meanwhile retains that spiciness but is light and gentle at the same time. Ultimately this Kentucky Straight clean and dry with a short finish but is no less satisfying for that! Basil Hayden Sr. actually hailed from Maryland but left that for reasons that remain unknown for Kentucky. Being new to Kentucky and so not yet tied to the old guard'srules' of bourbon, legend has it that Basil set out to make a batch simply using the ingredients he had on hand. What resulted was a bourbon with a uniquely high-rye mashbill, combining the sweetness of corn with the spicy undertones of rye.
