Encourage bushier growth by pinching out the growing tips while the plants are still young. Prior to planting outdoors in borders or patio containers, acclimatise well-developed plants to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days. Penstemons thrive in a sunny or semi-shaded location with fertile, well-drained soil. Once established, they can tolerate drier soils, but they dislike heavy soils that remain cold and wet during winter.
