Rhododendron 'Mary Helen' is a superb evergreen azalea, a striking shrub ideal for acid borders and shaded woodland gardens, flowering later than many, but well worth the anticipation. From early June, expect large, immaculate white flowers featuring dark, contrasting anthers. Its broadly spreading branches are densely covered in glossy green foliage year-round, bringing vibrancy to the garden even in winter.For optimal growth, choose a location with moist, well-drained, acidic soil enriched with well-rotted organic matter. Semi-shade or dappled sunlight is preferred, with protection from harsh, drying winds. Dwarf rhododendrons can tolerate sunnier spots if the soil remains consistently moist. In alkaline soil conditions, grow in patio containers using ericaceous and soil-based composts.Rhododendrons have surface roots, so avoid deep planting. Water regularly during the growing season, ideally with rainwater to maintain soil acidity, as tap water contains lime. In spring, feed with a slow-release fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants. Shield from cold winter winds and apply an autumn mulch to protect the roots, avoiding direct contact with the stem to prevent rot.
