Product Description

The Story of the Odyssey by Alfred J. Church is a retelling of the classic epic poem "The Odyssey," attributed to Homer. The narrative follows the Greek hero Ulysses (Odysseus in Greek) as he attempts to return home to Ithaca after the fall of Troy. The story begins with the gods discussing Ulysses fate, as he is held captive by the nymph Calypso on her island. Despite the gods intervention, particularly Athenes, Ulysses faces numerous challenges on his journey. He is shipwrecked and must build a raft to escape Calypsos island. As he sails, Poseidon, the god of the sea, creates a storm to thwart him. Ulysses is aided by the sea goddess Ino, who provides him with a magical veil to keep him safe. Meanwhile, his son Telemachus, urged by Athene, sets out to find news of his father, visiting Nestor in Pylos and Menelaus in Sparta. The suitors vying for Penelopes hand plot against Telemachus, but he is protected by the gods. The narrative weaves together the themes of divine intervention, human resilience, and the longing for home and family. Churchs adaptation captures the essence of the original epic, making it accessible to a modern audience while preserving its timeless themes. | Alfred J.
