A young goalkeeper from Mexborough, seven-year-old Corby, has shown remarkable determination and community spirit after a generous donation from Specsavers Mexborough allowed him to continue playing the sport he loves. Corby, who plays for Wombwell Town U8s, needed specialist prescription sports goggles to replace his regular glasses, which were not suitable for playing football. With a high prescription, he was eager to ensure he could see clearly while in goal.

Fundraising Efforts

Initially, Corby set out to raise £250 through a sponsored bike ride around Rother Valley Country Park. This was to cover the cost of the much-needed sports goggles. However, after hearing about his efforts, the team at Specsavers Mexborough stepped in and donated the goggles, allowing Corby to focus on his love for football rather than fundraising for himself.

Despite receiving the goggles, Corby and his family decided to continue with the bike ride. They shifted their fundraising goal to support Lauren's Legacy, a campaign run by the Red Sky Foundation aimed at placing life-saving defibrillators in football clubs across the UK. Corby’s initiative has since raised thousands of pounds for this important cause, demonstrating his commitment not just to his own needs, but to the safety of others in the community.

Community Support

Rebecca Dixon, the store director at Specsavers Mexborough, expressed her admiration for Corby’s determination:

"When we heard about Corby's determination to raise the money himself so he could carry on playing football, we knew we wanted to help. Everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy the activities they love, and we're delighted that Corby can continue playing in goal with the confidence to continue playing the sport he loves."

This support from a local business highlights the importance of community involvement in helping young athletes pursue their passions.

Corby’s mother, Leanne Otter, shared her pride in her son’s efforts:

"Football means so much to him, and he was determined to do whatever he could to keep playing in goal. The goggles have given him the confidence to carry on doing what he loves, and we're so proud that his fundraising has also been able to support Lauren's Legacy and help other people."

This sentiment shows how a small act of kindness can ripple through the community, inspiring others to give back
