|Artists with learning disabilities and autism in Leeds are rallying together to protect their beloved charity, Pyramid. This Leeds-based arts organisation has launched a crowdfunding campaign called Protect Pyramid's Future, aiming to raise £20,000 by 1 September 2026. The initiative comes in light of rising costs and cuts to funding, which have placed the charity at a critical crossroads.
Pyramid's Impact on the Community
For over 35 years, Pyramid has been a beacon of hope for nearly 60 artists with learning disabilities and autism each year. Originally starting as a small art group at the now-closed Meanwood Park Hospital, Pyramid has grown into a vital organisation that offers more than 1,500 hours of creative workshops annually. Led by both artists with and without disabilities, Pyramid not only encourages artistic expression but also contributes to leading research on inclusive arts.
However, the organisation is now facing significant challenges. Funding cuts and an increasingly difficult fundraising environment mean that without immediate support, Pyramid may have to make tough decisions about its future programmes. This is where the crowdfunding campaign comes in, aiming to safeguard the weekly art groups, flexible studio time, and individual artist support that Pyramid provides.
Community Support and Fundraising Goals
The crowdfunding campaign has already seen a warm response, with over 60 supporters donating within just over a week of its launch. So far, the campaign has raised 15% of its £20,000 target. Donations will not only help sustain existing services but also support the development of new products that showcase the artists' work, allowing them to reach a wider audience.
Alfie, a dedicated artist with a learning disability, has been part of the Pyramid community for over six years. He travels from North Yorkshire to attend the organisation's accessible studio space and unique art programmes. Alfie shared his experience, saying, “I love coming to Pyramid as it is a place where people listen to my ideas and help me develop. I have learnt lots of new things at Pyramid, and it was a dream come true to work on projects with a professional filmmaker. Pyramid has given me so many opportunities to make art and advocate for myself.”
Voices of Advocacy
Mindy Goose, a trustee of Pyramid, highlighted the unique support the organisation offers:
“Without us, many people with learning disabilities and autism in Yorkshire wouldn’t be able to develop the skills and confidence they need to go on to become working artists. We know our work makes a real difference to our members and to the cultural life of the region.”
“Like many arts organisations, we are facing significant financial pressures that have brought us to this critical moment. Without additional support, we will have to make difficult decisions about our future programme.”
Mindy emphasised the members’ desire to create meaningful art that challenges perceptions and inspires change for many years to come.
