•Farming, biodiversity, local housing and community events are all in focus in Lockton this summer, with plenty happening across the village and the wider North York Moors.
Biodiversity
Lockton residents have recently established a wildflower meadow and community orchard in conjunction with the National Park.
The 'Biodiversity Group' are recording the rich flora and fauna in our area. This is a Brimstone Moth.
Lockton Women's Institute Celebrates New Members and Upcoming Fundraiser on August 8th
Lockton, Levisham and Goathland Women’s Institute has enjoyed a busy first half of the year, welcoming six new members and continuing its popular coffee and lunch gatherings at the local tea room.
Members have taken part in a varied programme including an artisan cheese-making talk from Rosedale Goat’s Cheese, an update on Lockton’s GrubsUp! biodiversity projects, an evening exploring the models and muses of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and a presentation from Futureworks North Yorkshire about its work supporting young people.
Two members also took to the skies for a gliding experience at the Wolds Gliding Club in Pocklington. Next on the calendar is the WI’s annual fundraiser at the Goathland Show on Saturday 8 August, while regular meetings continue on the first Wednesday of each month.

Groundswell 2026 and the future of farming
Regenerative agriculture continues to attract interest across the farming community, with Groundswell providing a two-day forum dedicated to farming practices that aim to improve soil health, biodiversity and food production.
Known for its grassroots, “by farmers for farmers” approach, the event brings together farmers and others interested in sustainable agriculture to exchange knowledge, ideas and practical experiences.
The future of Yorkshire’s farming and food system is also under discussion. Ali Morpeth, co-founder of Planeatry Alliance and a public health nutritionist, has highlighted the importance of a resilient domestic farming sector and the relationship between food security, farming and public health.
Lockton Artists Art Weekend
Local creativity will take centre stage when the Lockton Artists Art Weekend returns from 18 to 20 September 2026 at venues throughout the village.
The weekend will provide an opportunity to discover work by local artists and support creative talent within the community. Find out more here.
Housing and anti-social behaviour
Local housing and anti-social behaviour are among the issues being raised within the community.
Kevin Hollinrake MP has addressed concerns surrounding both subjects, including the importance of maintaining safe communities and ensuring appropriate housing remains available to local people.
North York Moors Local Plan review
The future development of the North York Moors is also under consideration as the National Park Authority reviews its Local Plan.
Led by Chief Executive Tom Hind, the review will help establish policies governing future development within the National Park, with the aim of balancing the needs of communities with protection of the area’s distinctive landscape.
Affordable housing is among the important issues being considered, and residents are being encouraged to contribute their views.
A community forum meeting is scheduled for 8 October 2026, providing another opportunity for local people to discuss the Local Plan and issues affecting communities within the National Park.
Lockton Summer Fair
The Lockton Summer Fair takes place on Saturday 22 August 2026 at Lockton Tea Rooms (Hudgin Ln, Lockton, Pickering YO18 7QA), bringing the community together while raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The event promises a summer day out for local residents, families and visitors while supporting the charity’s work.
