|As autumn approaches, many households in Wakefield are bracing for a spike in energy bills. With the energy regulator set to increase its price cap on 1 October, families can expect to pay around £60 more per year for their gas and electricity. Understanding the impact of these rising costs, Wakefield Council is stepping up to offer vital support to residents who may be struggling to keep up with their energy bills.
Support Available For Residents
Wakefield Council wants to remind everyone that help is available for those facing difficulties due to increasing energy costs. The Council's initiatives are designed to assist residents in managing their finances and ensuring they can stay warm this winter.

Cllr Andrew Wakefield, who is the Cabinet Member for Strategic Housing, Skills and Business Growth, expressed the urgency of the situation, stating:
“The rise in energy bills will be a real concern for many of our residents. Especially as colder weather approaches and people spend more time indoors.”
“We can help residents understand what assistance is available and whether they are eligible for any of our schemes.”
Energy Debt Fund
One key resource available to residents is the Energy Debt Fund. This fund provides grants to help individuals clear problematic energy debts, which can be a significant source of stress for many families. Additionally, it can contribute towards future energy bills, helping to ease the financial burden as winter approaches. Residents who find themselves in a difficult position with their energy expenses are encouraged to check their eligibility for this support, as it could make a substantial difference in their ability to pay their bills.
Fuel Poverty Fund
For those who own their homes and are struggling to afford essential heating improvements, the Fuel Poverty Fund is another important option. This fund is targeted at low-income homeowners whose health may suffer from living in cold conditions. If a household’s heating system is broken, condemned, or difficult to operate due to illness or disability, residents may qualify for a free replacement heating system. All work related to the Fuel Poverty Fund is organised through the Council’s approved contractors, ensuring that residents receive the support they need without any upfront costs.
Money Smart Service
In addition to the specific funds available for energy-related issues, Wakefield Council also offers a free service called Money Smart. This service is available to all residents in the district and provides tailored support to help people manage their finances more effectively. The Money Smart service covers a range of financial issues, including:
Budgeting advice
Debt management
Mortgage difficulties
Other money-related concerns
By assisting residents in maximising their income and managing their budgets, Money Smart aims to empower individuals to take control of their financial situations.
