Yorkshire Children's Charity Faces Urgent Need for Winter Essentials Support in 2026

As the chill of winter approaches, a concerning situation is unfolding across Yorkshire. The Yorkshire Children’s Charity (YCC) has revealed that over 2,500 children are already in urgent need of winter essentials, with applications for support surpassing the total received throughout all of 2025. This alarming trend comes at a time when UK inflation has risen to 3.1%, further straining the budgets of families already struggling to make ends meet.

Rising Need for Support

The YCC's Winter Essentials campaign is gearing up to assist at least 3,000 children this year. This increase of 25% from last year’s campaign is indicative of the growing demand for help. The charity has reported a £142,000 shortfall in funding, which is crucial for delivering essential items like coats, shoes, pyjamas, and bedding to those in need.

With the cost of living continuing to rise, families are finding it increasingly difficult to afford basic necessities. The charity is witnessing the impact this has on children directly through their connections with schools, social workers, and other key workers who are on the front lines identifying those most in need.

Winter Essentials Campaign

This week, YCC staff and volunteers have been busy at their warehouse in Thorpe Arch, picking and packing thousands of essential items. Each bundle, costing £50, includes:

• A warm coat

• Waterproof shoes

• Pyjamas

• Hat, scarf, and gloves

• Bedding

These bundles are designed to provide children with the warmth and comfort they need during the cold winter months. The campaign works closely with trusted sources, such as schools and social workers, to ensure that the support reaches those who need it most.

Voices from the Charity

Charlotte Farrington, the Founder and CEO of Yorkshire Children’s Charity, emphasised the urgency of the situation:

“Today’s inflation figures are another reminder of the pressure families are under. When a household is already struggling to afford the basics, there is very little left to cut back on.”

She highlighted the importance of these essentials for children, explaining how something as simple as a coat can significantly affect a child's ability to attend school and participate in everyday life.

Farrington continued, “Behind every one of these bundles is a child. A child who needs a coat to walk to school, shoes that keep their feet dry or proper bedding to sleep under at night.” Her call to action is clear: “We cannot do it without Yorkshire behind us.”
