•This summer, LNER is inviting children to embark on a literary adventure as part of the National Year of Reading. Working alongside charity partner The Reading Agency and other train companies like Northern, TransPennine Express, and Southeastern, LNER is transforming train journeys into exciting reading experiences for young passengers. Starting from 4 July 2026, children can grab a free Summer Reading Challenge pack during their travels.
Challenge Theme: Read to the Beat!
The theme for this year's Summer Reading Challenge is “Read to the Beat!” which aims to inspire children to dive into books while they travel. Each pack is designed to ignite creativity, boost confidence, and foster a lifelong love of reading. Kids will be encouraged to set their own reading goals, track their progress, and unlock fun rewards, making reading as thrilling as the journey itself.

LNER Summer Reading ChallengePop-Up Reading Sessions
To kick off the campaign, comedian and writer Sarah Pascoe has been engaging with schoolchildren during pop-up reading sessions on trains between London, York, and Leeds. During these sessions, she shares her enthusiasm for reading and introduces children to the new Summer Reading Challenge Packs. This interactive approach aims to inspire children to read while on the move.
About The Summer Reading Challenge
Now in its 27th year, the Summer Reading Challenge is the UK’s largest programme encouraging children to read for pleasure. Each year, around 700,000 children participate through public libraries. By bringing these packs onto trains, LNER is helping the initiative reach a wider audience beyond traditional library settings, making it easier for families to incorporate reading into their travel plans.
