|As summer slowly transitions into autumn, Scampston Hall and Walled Gardens are buzzing with activity this September. Following a long, dry summer, the recent rain has revitalised the gardens, making them a perfect destination for visitors looking to enjoy the beauty of nature. With exciting events lined up, including the much-anticipated Autumn Plant Fair, there’s plenty to look forward to at Scampston this month.
Autumn Plant Fair
One of the highlights in September is the Autumn Plant Fair taking place on Sunday, 13th September. The fair opens at 10am and features a fantastic selection of independent nurseries, growers, and garden-related stalls. It’s a great opportunity for gardening enthusiasts to explore a variety of plants and perhaps pick up something new for their own gardens.
Throughout the day, visitors can attend two informative talks by the garden team:
- 12.30pm – A Tale of Tomatoes: Flavours, Cultivation and Seed Saving
- 2pm – A Garden in Motion: Prairie Planting at Scampston
Additionally, there will be live music from the Malton White Star Band, along with refreshments available from the field and the Pantry Café. The Walled Garden, Hall Gardens, and grounds will remain open, providing ample opportunity for visitors to enjoy the stunning surroundings.
Last Chance for the Dinosaur Trail
For families visiting Scampston, there’s just one week left to embark on the Dinosaur Trail. This fun activity has been a hit with children this summer, allowing them to hunt for hidden dinosaurs around the grounds. It’s a thrilling adventure for little dinosaur fans, so picking up a trail guide at the entrance is a must before they disappear after this season.
Upstairs Downstairs Tours
Starting next week, the popular Upstairs Downstairs Tours of Scampston Hall will resume. These guided tours provide a fascinating glimpse into the Hall's history, showcasing everything from its grand rooms to the intimate details of family life behind the scenes. Tours are available Wednesday through Friday at 12pm, 1pm, and 2pm, making it a perfect addition to any visit to the gardens.
Halloween Celebrations
Although it may seem early, preparations are already in motion for Scampston's Halloween festivities. The Halloween at Scampston event will take place on Thursday, 29th and Friday, 30th October, featuring a range of spooky activities. Families can join the Wicked Witches of Scampston for Halloween games and crafts during the afternoons, leading up to the famous Scampston Spooky Walk in the evenings. Given its popularity, tickets will be available soon, so it’s wise to keep an eye on announcements.
Volunteer Opportunities at The Bothies
The Bothies, a Learning Resource Centre and charity located within the Scampston Walled Garden, is seeking volunteers to join their friendly team. Those interested in gardening can help with various tasks, including:
- Planting and maintaining raised beds
- Caring for the pelargonium collection
- Sowing and nurturing plants for sale to support the charity
No expert gardening skills are required, just a passion for plants and a willingness to get involved. Whether it’s a regular morning or an occasional afternoon, any help would be appreciated. Interested individuals can reach out via email for more details.
