A new play, All at Sea, is set to make waves this autumn at Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre. Running from 16 to 31 October 2026, this production is a collaboration with Newcastle’s Live Theatre and promises to deliver a unique theatrical experience inspired by a real-life story that captured public attention.

Cast and Crew

Featuring the talents of actors Phil Corbitt and Sarah Belcher, All at Sea will be directed by Maria Crocker. The play is penned by Alison Carr, known for her previous works such as Caterpillar and The Last Quiz Night on Earth, both of which have been showcased at the Stephen Joseph Theatre. Director Maria Crocker expressed her excitement about the cast, stating, “I am so excited to welcome Phil Corbitt and Sarah Belcher to the All at Sea team. This sharp and witty play requires two expert actors to bring this extraordinary couple to life, and this casting has delivered just that.”

About the Play

All at Sea draws inspiration from the infamous “canoe man” story, which involves a man who faked his own death in a canoeing accident to claim insurance money. The plot centres around Colin and Deborah, a couple facing mounting financial pressures, including a hefty mortgage and spiralling debt. In a desperate move, Colin concocts a plan to fake his death in the North Sea, hoping to secure an insurance payout that could save them from their troubles.

Performance Schedule

The play will first premiere at Live Theatre Newcastle from 24 September to 10 October 2026, before making its way to Scarborough. Tickets for the SJT can be purchased by calling the box office at 01723 370541 or online at www.sjt.uk.com.
