The Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough is currently showcasing the critically acclaimed comedy Handbagged, written by Moira Buffini. This Olivier Award-winning play opened on 31st July 2026 and will be running until 29 August 2026. The production delves into the fascinating relationship between two of the most powerful women of the late 20th century: Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher.

Behind Closed Doors

Handbagged takes audiences on a journey from 1979 to 1990, exploring the weekly meetings between the Queen and the Iron Lady. These meetings were marked by differing ideologies, with Thatcher famously believing that "there is no such thing as society," while the Queen dedicated her life to serving it. The play invites viewers to ponder whether these two strong figures ever found common ground or if their contrasting beliefs kept them apart.
