South Otterington Primary Pupils Publish Storybook Inspired by Housing Development Visit

Primary school pupils from South Otterington C of E Primary School have celebrated a remarkable achievement by publishing their very own storybook, inspired by a visit to a local housing development. The book, titled A Trip To Lovell, reflects the children's experiences during their educational trip to the Saints Green at Peggy’s Field development, where national housing specialist Lovell is constructing 42 new homes.

Inspiring Visit

The journey to creating this storybook began in May last year when Year 3 and 4 pupils toured the building site. During their visit, they learned about health and safety practices on construction sites and even had the chance to try their hand at bricklaying. This hands-on experience allowed the children to see how homes are built and understand the importance of teamwork and safety in construction.

Naomi Lanham, the class teacher for Year 3 and 4, expressed the excitement the students felt during their time at the site. “The children absolutely loved their trip to the site – it was practical and hands-on, and they had a fantastic time. Putting together the book was the perfect way to remember the visit,” she said. The visit also tied into their geography lessons, showcasing how local land can be transformed into new housing, which made the learning experience even more relevant.

Creative Collaboration

After their visit, the pupils were tasked with creating a fictional storybook based on their experiences. Older students wrote the narrative while younger ones illustrated the pages. This collaborative effort allowed the children to employ their learning in English and geography, resulting in a creative project that blended education with fun.

Naomi elaborated on the project’s educational value:

“We learnt about story structure in English lessons and used that to put the narrative together. The students had to include some action, humour, and a problem that needed solving. It all came together to make a brilliant, informative story, and the children loved every minute of the process.”

Publication Celebration

Once the book was completed, the school sent a scanned copy to Lovell, who arranged for its publication. This month, the pupils returned to Saints Green to celebrate the opening of the Lovell Little Library, a mini library designed for residents to borrow and share reading materials. A copy of their book is now proudly displayed in this library, marking a significant milestone for the young authors.

Rebecca Darby, Head of Sales for Lovell in the North East, shared her thoughts on the project:

“We welcomed South Otterington C of E Primary School to site over a year ago, and they’ve worked so hard to bring that visit to life in their brilliant book. It seems fitting that one of the first books on the shelf is inspired by the development itself. At Lovell, we pride ourselves on building meaningful relationships with the local community, and it’s been great to work with the school over the past year.”

Looking Forward

The project has not only provided the children with a sense of accomplishment but has also sparked interest in the construction industry. Rebecca expressed hope that some of the pupils might consider careers in this field in the future, inspired by their experiences. Naomi added that seeing the final product of their hard work has instilled a sense of pride in the young authors and illustrators. “They feel such pride at being authors and illustrators, and it’s wonderful to see,” she said.

As the school year comes to a close, the project holds special significance, especially with the retirement of the headteacher, Miss Gledhill. Naomi remarked, “What a keepsake to take away! We’d like to thank Lovell for their support on this project and would love to work with them again in the future.”

The success of this storybook project highlights the importance of practical learning experiences and community engagement in education. Through their visit to the housing development and the subsequent creation of their book, these young pupils have gained valuable skills and memories that will last a lifetime.
