|A vibrant new mural has transformed the exterior of Stanley St Peter’s Primary School, bringing a splash of colour and creativity to the local community. Unveiled on 21 July 2026, this stunning artwork was created by Wakefield-based artist Tony Wade, who collaborated closely with residents to design a mural that reflects the unique character and beauty of Stanley.
Community Collaboration
The mural features twelve panels that celebrate both the natural and urban landscapes of Stanley. This project involved local residents who participated in silk painting workshops, allowing them to contribute their ideas and artistic skills. Participants included pupils from years 4 to 6 at Stanley St Peter’s, groups from Stanley Library, and members of the Stanley Residents Group. Their contributions helped create a mural that truly represents the community's spirit.
Art Inspired by Nature
Artist Tony Wade expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work with the local community, stating, “It’s been a real privilege to work with the communities of Stanley to design and create this mural.” He highlighted the beauty of local natural spaces, mentioning the Stanley Ferry Flash and Stanley Marsh. The mural showcases these areas, featuring plants, wildlife, and landmarks that are familiar to residents.
What’s Depicted in the Mural?
The mural's themes include:
Urban Nature - Showcasing the blend of city life and nature.
Stanley Ferry Flash - Highlighting the Newlands Nature Reserve and its waterways.
Stanley Marsh Nature Reserve - Celebrating the diverse habitats found in the area.
Nature on Our Doorstep - Reflecting the plants and wildlife seen in gardens and during community walks.
Each of the twelve panels measures 1m x 2m and has been reproduced on durable aluminium, ensuring that the artwork will be enjoyed by future generations.
Community Pride
Michelle Wiggins, the Headteacher at Stanley St Peter’s Primary School, shared her thoughts on the project:
“We were incredibly proud for our school to host this mural and to play a part in celebrating the stories and character of Stanley.”
She noted that the project provided pupils with a fantastic opportunity to engage creatively, while also fostering a sense of ownership among the community.
Enduring Legacy
Supporting the mural's creation were the Wakefield Council Community Grants Programme and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Seasons of Culture programme.
Cllr Lukasz Borcz, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Sport, remarked:
“This mural was inspired by the local community and the landscapes they see every day. We want people to stop and look at the artwork and be proud of the place they call home. It’s a beautiful mural that will be appreciated for years to come.”
