Spilmans Farm's Sunflower Fields Open This Weekend in North Yorkshire

As summer reaches its peak, the vibrant sunflower fields at Spilmans farm, located near Thirsk in North Yorkshire, are set to open this weekend on Saturday, 8 August. Known for being one of the largest Pick-Your-Own farms in the area, Spilmans has planted over 20,000 sunflowers, creating a stunning display that promises to attract visitors of all ages.

Sunflower Season at Spilmans

Tom Spilman, the owner of this multi-generational farm in Sessay, shared insights about the journey leading to this exciting opening:

“With late frosts in May, coupled with unusually hot weather in June, it’s been a tricky start to the season.”

However, he is pleased to report that the sunflowers are in “superb shape,” ready to greet guests with their bright blooms.

The fields feature four different varieties of sunflowers: Ronnie Orange, Maximo, Solano Orange, and Soham Sunset. Each variety brings its unique charm, with heights ranging from just over one metre for the Maximo, known for its double-layered orange petals, to the towering Soham Sunset, which can reach nearly two metres tall. Tom highlights that the variety in height is perfect for families looking to capture memorable summer photos among the flowers.

Activities for All Ages

Beyond the sunflowers, Spilmans offers a variety of activities across its 100-acre farm. Visitors can enjoy:

• Strawberry Picking: A favourite summer pastime, allowing families to pick their own fresh strawberries.

• Wildflower Meadow: A beautiful area to explore and appreciate native flora.

• Nature Trail: A fun trail where children can search for clues and answer questions related to the farm's working fruit fields.

For those feeling peckish, the Stone Barn Café offers a delightful menu that includes brunches, lunches, wood-fired pizzas, and a selection of hot and cold drinks. This café is the perfect place for families to refuel after a day of outdoor fun.

Weather-Proof Fun

Spilmans also caters to families looking for indoor entertainment. The indoor play barn features pedal tractors, a ball pit, and a sand area, providing a safe and enjoyable space for children to play, rain or shine. The sunflower fields will be open from Wednesday to Sunday until the crop finishes, making it easy for visitors to plan their trips. Tickets for the sunflower fields are included with entry to the strawberry fields. Entry prices start at just £2.50 for individual pre-booked tickets online, with discounts available for families and groups. While pre-booking is recommended, walk-up admissions may also be available, although they are subject to the farm's capacity.

For every £5 spent on fruit, the cost of the ticket can be reimbursed, making it even more appealing for families wanting to enjoy both the sunflowers and the delicious fruits of summer. Sunflower stems are priced at £1.50 each, or four stems for £5.
