Welcome to Yorkshire
As the countdown continues, excitement is building for the Altra Yorkshire Marathon Festival, just four weeks away on Sunday, 18th October 2026. Thousands of participants are preparing to lace up their trainers and take to the start line in York, making this event a highlight of the city's sporting calendar.
Organised by Jane Tomlinson's Run For All in partnership with title sponsor Altra, the marathon brings together runners of all levels—from first-timers to seasoned marathoners—alongside wheelchair participants and charity fundraisers for a day filled with achievement, determination, and celebration.
Festival Highlights
The Altra Yorkshire Marathon is renowned for its flat, fast, and scenic route, making it an appealing challenge for participants aiming for a personal best or those tackling the 26.2-mile distance for the first time. The marathon starts and finishes at the University of York and showcases some of the city's most iconic sights, including the magnificent York Minster. Runners will also enjoy the beautiful surrounding countryside as they make their way back into the heart of the city.

Atmosphere and Community Support
On race day, participants can expect an incredible atmosphere, with thousands of spectators cheering them on. Local schools, community groups, and performers will line the route, creating a supportive environment that celebrates the efforts of every runner. This sense of community is what makes the Altra Yorkshire Marathon so special, as it unites people from all walks of life in a shared experience of determination and achievement.
Charity Fundraising
At the heart of the marathon is the spirit of giving back. Participants are encouraged to run for a charity that resonates with them or support one of the event's partner charities. These include:
York Foodbank
Yorkshire Cancer Research
The Jane Tomlinson Appeal
Dementia Forward
The Island
St Leonard's Hospice
Macmillan Cancer Support
York Mind
Children with Cancer UK
Each participant's efforts contribute to the significant fundraising impact the marathon has on these vital organisations, making every step they take on the course meaningful.
Training Days for Participants
As race day approaches, participants are entering the final stages of their training. To support them, two exciting training events are being offered:
Track & Chat - Wednesday, 30th September, 6pm – 8pm: This event will feature a guided track workout, where participants can test Altra's latest racing shoes and engage with Altra co-founder Brian Beckstead. It's a great opportunity to fine-tune race preparations and connect with fellow runners.
Altra Shakeout Run - Saturday, 17th October, 9.45am – 12.30pm: Starting from Up & Running York, this relaxed 5K run allows participants to try out popular Altra shoes while soaking in the pre-race atmosphere. After the run, everyone can enjoy a complimentary drink and pastry at the store.
