|York St John University has announced a significant new chapter for the historic King's Manor, which will soon become part of its learning environment. This iconic medieval building, located just a short walk from the university's main campus on Lord Mayor’s Walk, has a fascinating history dating back to the 15th century. Originally built as the abbot's house of St Mary's Abbey, King's Manor has played a pivotal role in education over the centuries, serving as a school and, more recently, as part of the University of York.

With York St John University taking a long lease on the site from City of York Council, the building will continue its legacy as a centre of learning, welcoming students and staff when the new academic year begins in September 2026.
Exciting Developments Ahead
The university plans to make extensive use of the King's Manor facilities, creating new teaching and lecture spaces that will enhance the student experience. Some of the new features will include:
A home for the Law Clinic and Business Clinic, which will provide practical learning opportunities for students.
Dedicated business incubation spaces to support budding entrepreneurs.
New event facilities for workshops, talks, and community events.
Office accommodation for up to 100 staff members.
This expansion will help the university reconfigure its existing spaces across other sites, improving student timetabling and reducing reliance on temporary facilities.
Community Engagement and Accessibility
York St John University is not just focused on enhancing its facilities; it is also committed to making King's Manor more accessible to the public. The university aims to improve links to the wider Abbey Precinct, creating a vibrant community hub where students and locals can collaborate and learn together.

Celebrating Milestones
This year is particularly special for York St John University, as it marks 185 years since its founding and 20 years since it achieved university status. Over the past few years, the university has invested a staggering £100 million in transforming its 11-acre campus in York's historic centre. This includes the construction of the award-winning Creative Centre, which has become a focal point for creativity and innovation.
In addition to the main campus on Lord Mayor's Walk, the university operates a Sports Park on Haxby Road and has a London campus near Canary Wharf, further expanding its reach and influence.
