|Major overnight roadworks are set to commence on the A19 south of York, specifically between Escrick and the Designer Outlet roundabout, beginning at 8pm on Monday 28 September 2026. This initiative is part of the City of York Council's ongoing Highways Maintenance programme, aimed at ensuring the road remains safe and well-maintained for all users.
Road Closure Details
During the works, the A19 will be closed in both directions from the Designer Outlet roundabout to Skipwith Road in Escrick. The road closure will take place each weeknight from 8pm until 6am, running for approximately ten nights, with the project expected to conclude by 6am on Saturday 10 October 2026. Importantly, the roundabout itself will remain open, allowing drivers to travel north towards York, or east and west on the A64. This means that although the A19 will be closed, local traffic can still navigate around the area without major disruption.
Traffic Management
A signed diversion route will be in place for all traffic except buses. Given the A19’s role as a major route for larger vehicles, the diversion must accommodate their size and weight. The alternative route will include:
A64 Tadcaster Road (from the Designer Outlet roundabout)
A162 through Towton and Sherburn in Elmet bypass
A63 past Selby
Rejoining the A19 at Barlby, continuing north to Escrick
For those travelling to the Designer Outlet, employees and shoppers can use the roundabout to head north to York or east and west on the A64. If heading south, it is recommended to take the A64 towards Tadcaster to connect with the diversion.
Impact on Public Transport
Residents and commuters can rest assured that the 42 and 415 bus services between York and Selby will continue to operate normally, as buses will be allowed to pass through the road closure area. This ensures that public transport remains accessible for those relying on it during the works.
Cycling and Local Access
While there are no suitable diversions for cyclists along the A19 during this closure, the B1222 Naburn Lane route will still be accessible. This route can be used by cyclists wishing to travel between York and the A19 south of Escrick. Additionally, the Solar Way offers a safe, off-road cycling path linking Selby to York.

To keep everyone informed, the City of York Council encourages residents and businesses to sign up for email alerts regarding roadworks and disruptions in their area. By creating an account on the One Network website, users can select their preferred location and receive timely updates about ongoing works. Any street parking within the working area will be suspended during the road closure hours.
