|On Wednesday, 12 August 2026, significant road resurfacing work will take place on Lendal Bridge in York. The City of York Council has announced that to minimise disruption, this essential work will be carried out overnight, starting at 8pm and expected to be completed by 6am the following morning. This means that the bridge will be closed to vehicles during these hours, but pedestrians and those using mobility aids will still have access to the pavements and will be able to cross the bridge as normal.
Impact on Traffic and Local Businesses
The council is keen to ensure that residents and businesses are well-informed about the upcoming work. During the overnight closure, traffic will be diverted according to specific routes. For cyclists heading towards the railway station from the city centre, the diversion will take them along:

Rougier Street
For cyclists travelling in the opposite direction, the diversion will be along:

All other vehicles will be diverted along:

Queen Street
Blossom Street
A59 Holgate Road
Poppleton Road

While buses will continue to operate, some routes will be diverted after 8pm due to the road closure. However, buses will run as usual during the day from 6am to 8pm. The street Lendal, which connects Coney Street to Museum Street, will remain open for traffic during the work. From 8pm to 6am, the usual 'no right turn' rule at the Lendal exit will be temporarily lifted, allowing drivers to turn right. This is especially important for Blue Badge holders, who will still have access during these hours.
