Description
Founded in 1145, Newburgh Priory is a country house estate set amidst rolling hills nestled just outside the pretty village of Coxwold, North Yorkshire.
The Priory stands on land granted to Robert de Mowbray by William the Conqueror, on the site of an Augustinian Priory.
A fine stately home in a superb setting with extensive grounds containing a lake, a sunken water garden, walled cottage garden, topiary yews and woodland walks together with beautiful ceramics and family portraits make it an interesting visit. The House over the years has been a hotbed of political shenanigans, is partially cursed and is the alleged final resting place for the body of Oliver Cromwell – minus his head!
Previously the country seat for the Belassis family in the 16th & 17th century, today part of the house is still the family home of the Wombwell family.
Newburgh Priory is open to visitors for guided tours from April to June and for events throughout the year (please check the website).
