I visited the valley again last weekend 22nd june 2025 was please to see the right hand side of the woods were open after the storm damage that closed it. Was pleased with the amount of wildlife for viewing and photographing. My only concern was dogs running around in the woods in the river off the lead and not under any control from their owners. There were a couple of dog walkers who did have their dogs on leads which I respected. But being a bit nervous about loose dogs wasn't a pleasing experience for me or my partner. Plus one of the dogs deposited it's waste on the walkway which my partner stood in.
Great little car park, to embark on a wonderful walk in Forge Valley Woods. Do take care though, as there are parts of the path, which are unsteady/uneven. After walking through the woods, you come to a big open field and then after that, continuing into the field further on takes you to a pretty, incredible sight. Feast your eyes upon the remains of a ruined castle tower, the last part of this structure to survive. Built during the medieval period, it stands as a testament to what once was, all those years ago. There's even a plaque, with details about the origins of the castle and the remains... Fascinating stuff. Take some time, to soak up the countryside and the amazing, panoramic views that this place offers. Definitely worth a walk, especially those into history and nature in general.
As a car park it is pretty basic. However, there is a boardwalk along the river that makes for a beautiful walk through the wood. That is unsurprisingly a linear walk but get yourself a map and you can do a circular walk with beautiful views.
The walk itself is quite nice, although in need of maintenance. The boardwalk makes it wheelchair/buggy friendly. However the presence of the road on the other side of the river really takes away from the atmosphere. We felt that there are better walks in the area
Adequate if small car park. Good walks along the Derwent. Just need to be careful on the boardwalk as some parts have rotted through. I crossed the river by the bridge and turned right( may be better turning left.
