Never a true castle in the sense of the word it was built on the spur of land as a tower house in the 14th century for Sir Thomas de Etton. It was almost square and the basement still forms part of the core of the main building today. Alterations made in the 16th century for Sir William Fairfax who remodelled the old fortified building by building on the old mediaeval walls. In the 18th century wings were added and the interior was remodelled. I was staying at the local hotel and went for a walk when I met an employee locking the gate at about 6pm, he said it was ok to walk up the road and have a look around.
closed and blocked off with no signs on public walk from Yearsley forest until you get there. Don't waste your time
