Historic Beggar's Bridge (aka Lover's Bridge) over the Esk (1619) built by Tom Ferries, a poor local lad who was in love with the squire's girl. He went overseas and made good & on his return built the bridge so that lovers need never be separated either side of the river's divide like he was. It's a Scheduled Monument & listed grade II*.

The Beggar's Bridge is an atmospheric little spot in its own right, as well as being the gateway to some truly amazing scenery both up and down stream along the river Esk. I took a circular route to and from Egton Bridge, following the northern side of the river on the way to Egton Bridge and returning along a segment of the Coast to Coast walking route on the way back. There were plenty of chances to see traditional British wildflowers along the route, along with some brilliant river scenes. There's plenty going on in Egton Bridge, with public loos and a lovely hotel doing outdoor lunches, a farm shop and ice cream. It was great to get off the beaten track.
