Explored the ruins and secret hidden worlds at Gunnerside Gill in the Yorkshire Dales ππ₯. Word of advice....stick to the all trails route....we ventured slightly off course to try and explore the waterfalls along the way...but the only one you can access is at the very top end of the trail. We ran out of time for it, but loved the adventure anyway!
I just finished my first time in Gunnerside Gill and had a fantastic time. A loop of around 6 miles will take you around the sides of the valley and you can see the old industry ruins of lead mining. Lots of information boards are located beside the ruins to explain what happened. The buildings have a definite spooky feeling (to me). It's a beautiful place regardless of weather and although I stayed overnight on a Saturday, we didn't see many others. I'll be going back to see more soon. Walking boots are highly recommended as turning an ankle would be so easy in this terrain.
Decided on Gunnerside Gill for my 1st ever solo camp after doing 3 wild camps with friends, I parked in Gunnerside (very small car park - donations welcome) however there is some parking available on the road edges, Public toilets also well located and just 20p which were very clean and handy before and after the camp, I walked along the river, to where I camped which was just 1.6 miles one way, However I added a bit more distance to that on the way out and back tracked on myself before the rain came down and pitched up for the night, it rained pretty much all night, In wet conditions you have to be extra careful of your footings on some.ofnthe boulders that form so of the paths. All in all a lovely walk and if I had had more time and better conditions I'd have likely walked all the way to Rogan's seat...maybe next time.
Parking in Gunnerside, just over the bridge, honesty box, for about 10 cars. The path is on the other side of the bridge and takes you gently up Gunnerside Gill, towards the mines. Walk is approximately 2 miles to the mines and is narrow in places. Suitable for those who are steady on their feet as the path does wind up and down along the Gill. However, the views are fantastic, especially as you approach the old mining area.
What a fantastic walk, amazing views. Plenty of water along the valley and at the top where you would camp.
