Welcome to Yorkshire
Inspiration • June 16th, 2025
|Step back nearly two thousand years and experience life in Roman Britain as Malton once again welcomes back its Roman legionaries this summer. On Sunday 20th July, Orchard Field in Malton transforms into a living history encampment where families can immerse themselves in the sights, sounds and activities of Roman Delgovicia.

A Living History Experience for All Ages
Orchard Field, home to the remains of Malton’s Roman fort, is the perfect setting for this unique day out. The Roman re-enactors will set up camp, polish their armour and prepare to march through the fort with an army of young recruits. Children eager to join the ranks can sign up for the Kids Roman Army, with recruitment kicking off at 10:30am.
Discover Roman Crafts, Stories and Skills
Alongside the camp, visitors can wander through Roman entertainments and traditional crafts, meet archaeologists and historians, and chat with authors who bring ancient stories to life through fact and fiction. It’s the ideal chance to learn about Malton’s Roman heritage and uncover fascinating stories from Yorkshire’s ancient past.
Hands-On Fun for Young Centurions
Families will find plenty to keep younger visitors busy. Popular activities include painting swords, shields and tiles, creating colourful mosaics, and trying on authentic Roman costumes. For those feeling adventurous, axe and plumbata throwing are always crowd favourites — and young archaeologists can try their hand at the excavation ‘dig’ site.
Adding a modern twist, ‘Spartapuss’ will even teach the kids to beatbox, blending Roman fun with 21st-century rhythm.
Arena Displays and Cavalry Shows
Don’t miss the action in the arena, where the Roman Cavalry will showcase their riding skills. Other live demonstrations throughout the day bring the military might and daily life of Roman Britain vividly to life.
Delicious Food and Family Fun
No festival day is complete without something tasty. Food and drink stalls will be on hand to keep everyone fed and refreshed, giving visitors the chance to relax and soak up the atmosphere as they watch the displays.
Plan Your Roman Adventure
Tickets are excellent value: adults £10, children under 14 go free, and young people aged 14–18 are just £5. Discounted advance tickets, event details and information about free parking are all available on the Malton Museum website.
