Sorting out plans for the October half-term can feel like a bit of a mission, can't it? Trying to find something that keeps everyone from the toddlers to the teens (and even the adults) happy is a proper challenge. Well, it looks like Wakefield Exchange, or WX, has it all covered. Between 25 October and 2 November, the place is transforming into a massive Halloween playground, packed with spooky activities and fun for the whole family. There’s a whole week of Halloween events planned, so there’s plenty of time to get in on the action.

It’s not just about finding things to do; it’s about making some brilliant memories. And this year, WX is pulling out all the stops to make sure its spooky celebration is one to remember. The organisers seem to have thought of everything, from creative workshops for grown-ups to energetic discos for the little monsters.

Cllr Hannah Appleyard, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said:

“Whether you're looking for family-friendly fun or a night out with a spooky twist, WX is the place to be this October half-term.”

Get spooky with free family fun

Let's be honest, half-term can get a bit pricey. The good news is that WX is hosting a bunch of free activities throughout the week, which is a massive win for families. One of the highlights is a specially designed spooky graveyard scene. Forget awkward family photos in the living room; this is a chance to get some genuinely memorable Halloween snaps. Imagine a backdrop with moody lighting, cobwebs, and maybe a few ghostly figures lurking about. It’s the perfect spot to capture the kids in their costumes and create a fun, eerie memento of your day out. These family-friendly activities are designed to be drop-in, making it easy to fit them around other plans. It’s all part of the Halloween fun happening in Wakefield this October.

A crazy golf course with a Wakefield twist

Just in time for the spooky season, WX is launching its very own crazy golf course. But this isn't just any old mini-golf. The course is a brilliant tribute to the Wakefield district, with holes inspired by iconic local landmarks. Players can putt their way past mini versions of Castleford’s Queen’s Mill, The Hepworth Wakefield, and even Pontefract Racecourse. It’s a playful way to celebrate the area's rich heritage while having a laugh with the family. Think about it – trying to get a hole-in-one while navigating a tiny replica of a famous local spot. It adds a whole new level of fun to the game and offers a unique experience that connects directly to the local community. This activity is a fantastic example of how WX is combining entertainment with a nod to Wakefield’s history and culture.

Discos, face painting and Halloween fun

Halloween itself, on Friday 31 October, is when the parties really get started at WX. The day is jam-packed with events, especially for the younger crowd. Things kick off at 9:30am with a Toddler Spooky Disco. It’s a chance for the tiniest terrors to dress up in their cutest costumes and have a boogie. Later in the afternoon, the Kid’s Spooky Disco takes over, aimed at children aged 5–11. Expect all the classic Halloween tunes to get them dancing. And what’s Halloween without a bit of dress-up? From 11:30am to 4:30pm, there will be free face painting. This is perfect for a last-minute transformation before heading out for some trick-or-treating. Professional face painters will be on hand to turn visitors into their favourite spooky characters, whether that’s a vampire, a witch, or a friendly ghost. These discos are set to be some of the most popular Halloween events in town.

Grown-ups get to play too

The kids don’t get to have all the fun. WX has made sure there are plenty of activities for the adults as well. On Thursday 30 October, there’s a Pumpkin Painting Workshop. For £20, participants get all the materials they need to create a seriously stylish pumpkin. No more struggling with a carving knife – this is all about painting a masterpiece to take home. It sounds like a brilliantly relaxing and creative way to get into the Halloween spirit. Then, on Halloween night, the venue hosts a huge Day of the Dead Party. This promises to be a vibrant celebration inspired by the Mexican festival. There will be live music from a mariachi band, Beato Burrito, creating an amazing atmosphere. To help everyone get into the theme, there will also be free sugar skull face painting available. These adult-focused parties and workshops make WX a great destination for a night out. Anyone interested should probably book their tickets soon to avoid disappointment.

With so many different activities, from a spooky playground to creative workshops, WX in Wakefield is shaping up to be the go-to place this October. For more information on any of these Halloween events and to book tickets for the paid-for parties and workshops, people can visit the WX Wakefield website.
