We visited Fern Modern Sushi on a Friday evening, and even arriving early, the place was already packed—always a reassuring sign. We’d spotted the high praise on Google Maps and decided to see if it lived up to the hype; I can honestly say it surpassed it. From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed almost personally by Chef Fern herself. The level of hospitality here is second to none, and it truly makes the experience feel special. The food was a revelation. Everything was so fresh and vibrant it felt like we were experiencing proper sushi for the first time. The hot dishes were equally impressive; I had the pork belly ramen, and the broth was rich, savoury, and clearly made with patience. Whether you're a couple on a date, a family celebrating a birthday, or even a famous sportsman—one of whom was dining nearby during our visit—the atmosphere handles it all with ease. It feels like a high-end experience without any of the stuffiness. Logistically, we parked at Trinity Leeds, which is a straightforward walk and probably the most pragmatic option for the city centre. It’s a very accommodating spot for families and solo diners alike who appreciate quality. To top off a perfect evening, Chef Fern even walked us out and chatted with us for a while before we left. It’s a full marks establishment for me, and we’ve already got our next visit booked in the diary. If you value fresh food and a host who genuinely cares, this is the place.
I’ve experienced far too many restaurants that underwhelmed after falling for the social media that surrounds them. This was not that. Went as a family of four for our daughter’s 20th birthday and all four of us walked (waddled) away adamant it was the best sushi experience. The staff are lovely, the food equally so. We’ll be back.
Visited here recently due to the reviews, and it definitely lives up to the hype. I recommend reserving/making a booking if you’re going on a weekend because it was very busy when we went in late afternoon on a Saturday. I believe walk-ins are in a queue and soon as a table opens up you can go straight in. The food was very good and tasty. A plus point was that there wasn’t a long wait for anything - ordering, the drinks, the food and the bill/paying was a quick turn around. Highly recommend the fried calamari starter (forgot what its actually named on the menu), it was by far the best we’ve tasted anywhere. The ramen was plentiful, but if you opt for the hot version make sure to request the sauce as a side to add yourself - I forgot to do this and the soup was very spicy. But it was a good warming meal to counter my cold! The sushi tasted very fresh, both the starter and the main which my partner had. You get complimentary table water with your meal too which is a nice touch, especially if you’re having the spicy dishes. The cost was very good value for money. For 2 each of; starter, main and glass of wine it was under £60.
The food was amazing! Everything was fresh and full of flavour. The tempura was perfectly crispy, and the sushi roll with cheese was especially delicious. All the sauces paired really well with the dishes. Overall, it’s a great Japanese restaurant with good quality, fair prices, and quick service. Highly recommended!
The best meal I have ever had!! 🤩 I love fish and I love sushi, so when I decided to come to Leeds and found out about Fern Modern sushi, I had a look at the menu and found so many amazing choices! This place was recommended to me from family. I had the messy tower! It has bluefin tuna (which was extremely delicious and fresh) , sea bass (again, very fresh and extremely tasty), and salmon (super decorous and fresh) and it had some delicious fish eggs too! The avocado was also delicious and was perfectly ripe and the sushi was AMAZING! Messy tower is perfect for fish lovers like myself and I got to try some new fish so thank you very much! 🤩🤩 Everyone on the table loved the food and I want to come back next time I am in Leeds to get the messy tower again or something else from the menu like the rainbow roll or try some eel! 😍 So many amazing options on the menu! This place is amazing! Very kind staff and quick service and they told us food can be packaged up if we couldn’t finish which is always good! 😊 I really recommend this place (as someone who has tried many different sushi places across the country) and I WILL be back! 🤠🤠 -sorry for the low quality on the chicken katsu picture from the ramen, I zoomed in! But the person who ate it absolutely loved it (an extremely picky eater)! Thank you for giving us somewhere we can all eat 😂
