About Rare Bird Distillery

Description

Having lived and holidayed extensively in Europe, the founders of Rare Bird Distillery were struck by the outstanding quality of local food produce found there.

At the same time, the appeal of the ‘usual suspects’, meaning the everyday gin brands found in the supermarket were fast losing their  appeal, and so they decided to make our own, and Rare Bird Gin was born.

Soon after making this decision, the hunt was on for suitable premises, and good fortunate prevailed when they stumbled upon a derelict former stable block –not lacking in vision, and where some might see dust and debris, they saw a beautiful distillery, complete with a bar, seating, and retail space.

For those who have never visited, Malton will not disappoint. It is packed with artisan food producers, each one passionate about the quality of their product, producing the most delicious fare for you to sample and buy. It’s a treat for the senses, and we couldn’t be more proud to be right in the heart of this food movement.

‘The Stable Block’ as it was, is transformed to become, Rare Bird Distillery. At its heart sits a stunningly beautiful, shiny copper still, working magic, time after time to produce our signature London Dry gin. Customers are welcome to visit and see production in progress, and time permitting, we are pleased to answer questions about the process you can see before you.

Enjoy a free sample, or relax in our beautiful leather chesterfield sofa, looking out through our picture window over the Hawordian hills enjoying a G&T in a copa de balon glass, just as it was meant to be. This is the exact spot one of our customers were sat when they declared: ‘this must be the best spot in Malton.’

Rare Bird Distillery is licensed to serve drinks until 8.00 pm, later for private parties.

For the slightly more adventurous, why not have a bash at making your own gin. At our Gin School, you can do exactly that. Sessions are 2-3 hours, during which time, our Distiller will help you compile your own recipe and produce a 70cl bottle using a mini 1.5 litre still. The bottle is yours to take home. This unique experience is proving to be a big hit, as a personal experience, a gift or the theme for a celebration.

We look forward to welcoming you:

My wife, daughter and I are traveling from Texas and were referred to Rare Bird by a local resident. Matt owns and operates this true micro-distillery, and his passion for the craft is evident. We greatly enjoyed the process of making our own gin, from choosing from a multitude of botanicals to tasting the gin as it ran from our individual copper stills to bottling, naming, and labeling our personalized creation. I felt welcomed as if into his own home.

A very Ginteresting afternoon We have just spent a wonderful time in the company of Matt & Liz at Rarebird Distillery, spending the afternoon at their gin school. We were greeted with a delightful rhubarb gin and a talk about the gin distilling and the various styles of gin. Then it was up stairs to the glass room with a glass of Matt's London dry gin where we got to create our own recipe and our own gin to take hope. There was plenty of quality control testing along the way. It was a fabulous way to spend an afternoon and will be recommending it to everyone I meet. Thanks Matt & Liz.

We did the Rare Bird Gin School which was half learning about the process and the business and half creating our own flavoured gin. It lasted about 3 hours and it flew! What a fabulous way to spend a Sunday afternoon, Matt was very interesting and engaging and walked us all through choosing our ingredients from the huge choice. I can't recommend this enough I'm not a gin purest but I learned so much, loved playing chemist making my gin and really enjoyed trying their gins in such a stunning setting. Thank you for a brilliant day!

Nice place but such strange opening hours..: it’s open 10-3, even on the weekend, who want a gin before 3pm?! Would be so lovely to have as a little evening gin tasting bar

Had a great time here for a 'Gin School' - great and informative tour, very friendly and welcoming (plus good gin!). Enjoyed getting to make our own bottle with the help and advice to get the results we were aiming for.
