St Mary's Abbey

Most people visiting York probably intend to visit this ruined abbey, and it's worth a walk through. We visited on May 25, 2025, and were happily surprised by an ongoing Roman event.

Sadly I didn't have a great deal of time to have a proper look around. But the 10 minutes I did have were thoroughly enjoyable. There is plenty left to see of the abbey and I'm sure it would be very easy to spend an hour having a proper look around,which is intend to do on my next visit.

St. Mary’s Abbey is a beautiful historic ruin set in the peaceful Museum Gardens. The remains of the medieval abbey are impressive and give a glimpse of York’s rich past. Surrounded by greenery, it’s a perfect spot for a quiet walk, photos, or just relaxing.

St Mary’s Abbey is a stunning hidden gem in the heart of York. Even though it’s a ruin, the remaining arches and stonework are incredibly beautiful and atmospheric. You can really feel the history as you walk among the crumbling walls, with York Museum Gardens surrounding it in full bloom. It’s a peaceful spot to relax and take in the scenery, just a short walk from the hustle of the city centre. Perfect for photos, a quiet moment, or a scenic stroll. The combination of the historic ruins and the vibrant gardens makes it feel really special. Best of all – it’s free to visit! If you’re exploring York, definitely take the time to wander through. It’s a great reminder of the city’s deep medieval roots and a lovely break from the busy tourist spots.

It was a Sunday in May, and there was an event. Quite a large number of people and families were there. The Abbey was beautiful and majestic.
