About York Art Gallery
Description
York Art Gallery underwent a major redevelopment prior to its grand reopening on August 1 2015.
We have increased the gallery’s display space by 60% by creating a new first-floor gallery in the space above the Main Gallery on the ground floor. We have created an entirely new gallery above the existing South Gallery and expanded into the rooms next door to the gallery, formerly occupied by the City Archives.
York Art Gallery’s collection of paintings spans more than 600 years and works range from 14th century Italian panels and 17th century Dutch masterpieces to Victorian narrative paintings and 20th century works by LS Lowry and David Hockney.
Our collection of British studio ceramics is one of the most important in the UK. These are displayed in the Centre of Ceramic Art. Containing the work of over 600 artists and in excess of 5,500 objects.

On the 10th July, we went to the art gallery as I am very fond of Harland Miller and his exhibition "XXX" was on. We really enjoyed the exhibition as it was well planned. For the mature audiences and visually challenged, they have large print explanatory notes. For the kids & family and the young at heart, they have the playful activities to let you try out his artful ideas. We really enjoyed the lovely afternoon there.
We didn’t know about the artist or his work; we simply wanted to visit the museum — and it turned out to be a wonderful experience. The staff were very kind, and the museography was excellent. We really enjoyed the Harland Miller exhibition, and the museum’s own collection genuinely amazed us. Totally worth the visit and the ticket.
Very clean and tidy with Impossiblely friendly staff, great layout and tours, currently have a Harland Miller exhibition taking up all of the downstairs....I know local & famous etc but it's not for me.. but that's personal choice. Exhibition of a lot of plates no title that I could see maybe hosting a traditional Greek wedding. Was it worth £8.50? Absolutely and I will be back
My partner and I visited the York Art Gallery on our day out to York, and I must say it was a beautiful and varied collection of works in various mediums, including sculpture, installations and exhibitions, paintings, ceramics and more! We made our way through the gallery as advised by the insightful staff, and we were told there would be a talk by one of the gallery staff about a piece that particularly sparked their interest. We made our way through in time to listen to Matthew (I think!) talk very candidly about his passion for art, his particular affliction for Rose Wylie’s work, and give a passion fuelled, fact filled, and engaging background into the work currently being housed at York Art Gallery. His passion and energy was infectious and he really did capture our interests and leave us with the most beautiful message ‘remember to embrace your inner child’. I’d highly recommend going if you are in York and want to come away feeling inspired!
Great gallery with free entry for national art pass holders (me)! Lovely collection of British art mainly modernism. Though some nice 15th century works too. Great ceramics area laid out very innovatively in a domestic setting
