Dartmoor Distillery Ex-Bordeaux Red Wine Cask Matured Whisky is created in their (unconventional) 1,400 litre Cognac still, with legendary master distiller Frank McHardy (ex Springbank, Bushmills) in charge.. Notes of raspberry and blackcurrant over a core of malty vanilla and a whiff of white pepper. Develops into demerara sugar, cinnamon and toasted nuts. An accomplished whisky with plenty of complexity.. The distillery has easy access to high-quality barley and local spring water from a 200-foot deep borehole on the moor. The barley is sourced from nearby Preston Farm, and malted at the famous Warminster Maltings before being produced into a 9% ABV wash at Dartmoor Brewery pre-distillation.. The origins of Dartmoor Whisky Distillery can be traced back to Islay in the Hebrides several years ago, where a group of whisky enthusiasts had travelled to make whisky. On their return, they began to question why there weren’t any whisky distilleries in Devon.. The county’s climate and soil is perfect for growing great quality barley, the granite geology of Dartmoor is a wonderful filter for clear spring water, and the exceptional air quality with sea breezes provide great storage during maturation.
