The English Distillery uses slow processes, traditional equipment and honest, local ingredients. James Nelstrop's original goal for the distillery was to create England's finest single-malt whisky. Pure Breckland water is drawn from the spring underneath the distillery and the barley is sourced locally.. The Distillery. In 2005, co-founder James Nelstrop decided to make a life-long dream a reality and submitted a planning application for England’s first whisky distillery in over 100 years. It was officially opened in the summer of 2007 by his Majesty King Charles III. Iain Henderson, a renowned distiller formerly at Laphroaig, led the distillation of the first whisky. The business is now led by James Nelstrop’s son Andrew who is building a legacy of exemplary English whisky with approachable, world class spirits.
