A great day out in Suffolk for the whole family If you're looking for places to visit in Suffolk, the National Horse Racing Museum is one for the list. Located in the heart of Newmarket, just east of Cambridge, the National Horse Racing Museum is a celebration of horseracing in Britain. The 5-acre site itself used to be the palace and stable yards of King Charles II way back in 1600's - this really is a place steeped in rich history. You get 3 attractions in 1 and children go free! The attraction is made up of three main parts: National Horseracing Museum in the Trainer’s House and King’s Yard Galleries Packard Galleries of British Sporting Art in Palace House And a chance to meet former racehorses in the flagship Home of Retraining of Racehorses Also included in the general admission ticket is a Behind the Scenes tour where you can learn about how you retrain a racehorse - this tour takes place at 11am and 2pm each day so we recommend you try to visit during these times if you can. We hear the team here are very knowledgeable so prepare yourself and soak up as many horse racing facts as you can! Make a family day of it The grounds are pretty incredible and there really is lots to see. Pop into the restaurant or maybe the bakery when you get peckish - try the quiche! Or, if you're on a budget, there are lots of pretty picnic spots throughout the five acres. What's great about the National Horse Racing Museum too is the fact there's lots of things to do indoors and outdoors - so even if you bump into a bit of bad weather, you'll be right as rain! Discover Newmarket - the Home of Horseracing And if you have time, make sure you explore the rest of this historic and beautiful town and the surrounding area. It really is charming! The world-famous City of Cambridge is just 14 miles west of Newmarket. Head east to the historic town of Bury St Edmunds to explore the ancient Abbey and cathedral.
