Black Prince Dagger

Edward, Prince of Wales, popularly known as the Black Prince, was an exceptional military leader and his victories over the French at the Battles of Crécy and Poitiers made him very popular during his lifetime. He was one of the founders of the Order of the Garter and in 1348 he became the first knight of this order. His tomb effigy in Canterbury Cathedral is one of the most impressive in the world and lies beneath his heraldic 'achievements' - including a crested helmet, shield and gauntlets. The Black Prince Dagger is a highly ornate piece of craftsmanship. The polished brass hilt bears the Royal Arms of England directly above a shiny stainless steel blade featuring and engraving of St George slaying a Dragon. The motto of the Knights of the Garter 'HONNI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE' is emblazoned across the pommel and is Anglo-Norman for 'Evil unto him who thinks evil of it'. The dagger is housed in a leather wrapped sheath featuring heraldic devices and a relief of St George.
