Blank Canvas Abstract Sauvignon Blanc 2020

Enjoy it now, or cellar for a couple more years. No need to decant before serving. Founded in 2013 by Matt Thomson (A Master of Science) and Sophie Parker-Thomson ( A Master of Wine), Blank Canvas Winery has become one of New Zealand’s premier purveyors of quality grapes and a great crafter of single vineyard wines. While their headquarters can be found in the northeastern region of Marlborough, Matt and Sophie source their grapes from growers located in some of the country’s finest locations, such as Central Otago and Hawke’s Bay. Their range of wines comes from nine vineyards in all - each exceptional in its own way, and brought to life by two hugely experienced wine-makers. Abstract is a perfect example of Blank Canvas winery’s mission statement. It’s a unique, characterful Sauvignon Blanc, unencumbered by the expectations of what a New Zealand wine should be. It features a complex, aromatic nose, bursting with wild garden notes of white flowers, blackcurrant and gooseberry, and more tropical hints of guava and passion fruit. The grapes for this mixture were sourced from Holdaway Vineyard in Wairau Valley and aged in French oak for 14 months, giving the palate a sapid savoury tone. However, the main attraction is a core of tart gooseberry and passion fruit, outlined by a distinct salinity. This is a brilliant, original expression of New Zealand’s terroir, best paired with Asian seafood dishes, green aromatic herbs, or grilled fish, as fresh as you can get it.
