Remastered release of Toyahrsquos 1982 Silver certifiedselling album lsquoThe Changelingrsquo. lsquoThe Changelingrsquo is the darker, more grownup sequel to the previous yearrsquos goldselling album lsquoAnthemrsquo. lsquoThe Changelingrsquo entered the UK Top 40 in June 1982, peaking at number six. Produced by the acclaimed Steve Lillywhite , the album features a lineup of Toyah Willcox vocals, Joel Bogen guitar, the late Phil Spalding bass and the revered Simon Phillips drums. The album also features guest synthesizerskeyboards from Andy Clark David Bowie rsquos lsquoScary Monsters And Super Creepsrsquo, member of BeBop Deluxe and Simon Darlow . The brass section from Haircut 100 also feature on lsquoStreet Creaturersquo. For the tenth overall release of the Toyah Safari Records catalogue on Cherry Red, Toyahrsquos archivist Craig Astley has dug deep to expand the album with a treasure trove of previously unheard bonus tracks, previously unseen footage and unseen, previously thoughtlost, imagery. This Expanded 2CDDVD set presents a new remaster by Nick Watson from the original master tapes, approved by Joel Bogen, and further endorsed by Steve Lillywhite. 31 bonus tracks are distributed across the two audio discs, including 20 previously unreleased tracks , and a further three previously unavailable on any CD. CD1 includes two finished outtakes from the album sessions, BSide lsquoWarrior Rockrsquo and the unused lsquoParadise Childrsquo. The longsought after rerecording of lsquoDawn Chorusrsquo, previously only available on a BBC television appearance makes its CD debut after appearing in March 2023 on Cherry Redrsquos 10rdquo vinyl EP of lsquoBrave New Worldrsquo which sold out in minutes. The eight remastered tracks that featured on Cherry Redrsquos expanded vinyl release of the November 1981 EP lsquoFour More From Toyahrsquo also make their CD debut. This includes the previously unreleased tour intro lsquoGo Berserkrsquo and a rerecording of lsquoI Want To Be Freersquo, a tryout for the digital recording equipment subsequently used for lsquoThe Changelingrsquo. CD2 contains an alternate runthrough of the full album sequence all in revealing ldquowork in progressrdquo variations courtesy of archive master tapes and Joel Bogenrsquos cassette archive.These include significantly alternate vocals on lsquoBrave New Worldrsquo, lsquoCreepy Roomrsquo and lsquoCastawaysrsquo, the latter with an entirely different lyric. Many tracks feature placeholder keyboards from Joel Bogen before Andy Clark and Simon Darlow joined the album sessions. A completely unused instrumental outtake also appears. Joel Bogenrsquos previously unheard home Portastudio demos that include Phil Spalding on bass show the embryos that the songs on lsquoThe Changelingrsquo and lsquorsquoFour More From Toyah developed from. The accompanying DVD NTSCRegion Free includes two brand new indepth featurelength interviews with Toyah Willcox. lsquoCreating The Changelingrsquo sees Willcox looking back to the period running up to the album sessions, its recording and release. Previously unseen footage from the making of the lsquoBrave New Worldrsquo video is a true rare and revealing insight. The iconic 1982 promo video for lsquoBrave New Worldrsquo is included alongside a full song playthrough of completely unused and unseen performance footage from the lsquoBrave New Worldrsquo shoot. Eleven BBC archive clips span the lsquoFour More From Toyahrsquo and lsquoThe Changelingrsquo eras including lsquoGood Morning Universersquo on Top Of The Pops , lsquoItrsquos A Mysteryrsquo from the yearend TOTP Christmas Party . A band performance of lsquoI Want To Be Freersquo from the British Rock amp Pop Awards 1981, at which Toyah collected the award for Best British Female Singer appears alongside TV performances of lsquoBrave New Worldrsquo, lsquoStreet Creaturersquo, lsquoCastawaysrsquo, lsquoDawn Chorusrsquo and lsquoIeyarsquo 1982. Therersquos also rare rehearsal clips of lsquoThe Changelingrsquo summer tour from a Nationwide TV report. The Pebble Mill 6.55 Special from August 1982 includes Toyahrsquos performance of the reworked lsquoDawn Chorusrsquo and lsquoIeyarsquo. This special inclusion includes a full unbroadcast minute of the lsquoIeyarsquo performance, not seen due to running over the allocated programming schedule. Acoustic versions of the classics lsquoAngel amp Mersquo, lsquoBrave New Worldrsquo and lsquoGood Morning Universersquo feature from an intimate Toyah concert at Trading Boundaries in 2018. The package includes a brand new introduction from Toyah Willcox, a special dedication sleevenote to the late Phil Spalding by Toyah band cofounder, cowriter and guitarist Joel Bogen and extensive sleevenotes from Craig Astley. The artwork package is packed with rare and unseen imagery created for the album, including outtakes from the album cover session, and further unseen photographs taken for the Brave New World front and back covers
