The Grape Vitis Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic for flavour, especially if you’re planning on making your own fine wine or delicious grape juice. This attractive vine produces generous bunches of purple grapes late in the season. For best results and to protect the late-ripening fruit, grow under cover; a large greenhouse is ideal. However, in a very well-protected area, they can also thrive when trained against a sunny outdoor wall.When cordon-trained, expect a height of 1.8m and a spread of 1.5m. Untrained plants can reach up to 8m. Choose a sunny position in well-drained soil for your grape vines; a south-facing spot against a wall is ideal. These vines require sturdy support for their twining stems, so prepare a framework of wires stretched horizontally between two sturdy 1.8m posts or attached to a warm wall before planting.Incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost into the soil prior to planting. Plant grape vines against the wire supports, allowing a distance of 2m between plants. After planting, reduce the newly planted vine back to the height of the lowest support wire, and cut back any side shoots to one bud before tying the main stem into the supporting wires. Position in full sun for optimal growth. When fully established, expect a height of up to 1.8m and a spread of up to 1.5m.
