Tar & Roses is the vision of Don Lewis and Narelle King, born from their desire to fuse the bold fruit of Australian terroir with the structure and finesse of European winemaking. After decades in Heathcote and time spent consulting in Priorat, Spain, the duo launched Tar & Roses in 2006 to explore how Mediterranean varietals — and Shiraz — could thrive in the varied soils of Central Victoria.. ‘The Rose’ 2018 Shiraz is their barrel-selection release, sourced from two outstanding Heathcote sites, reflecting both power and elegance — a standout in modern Australian winemaking.. TASTING NOTES. A refined and expressive Shiraz, crafted from fruit grown on Terra Rossa Cambrian soil (for richness and power) and gravel soils (for aromatics and acidity). Aromas of blackberry, liquorice, and eucalyptus rise from the glass, followed by hints of mint. On the palate, expect black fruit, white pepper, vanilla, and tobacco, with silky tannins and integrated oak. The finish is long and balanced, with excellent ageing potential.. FOOD PAIRING. A superb match for grilled beef, lamb cutlets, or chargrilled vegetables. Its spice and finesse make it perfect with barbecue fare, or dishes with a smoky or caramelised edge.. FRIARWOOD SAYS. This is not your typical Aussie Shiraz. With finesse reminiscent of a Côte-Rôtie, it combines the concentration of Heathcote fruit with European restraint — a true collector’s gem from Tar & Roses.
