Product Description

ABOUT THE WINE. Château Palmer is named after a British officer, Colonel Charles Palmer (later Maj. General), who settled in Bordeaux in 1814. It is located in the center of the Margaux appellation, and its vineyards lie on a plateau of clay and gravel soils. Historically the estate has always prided itself on the exceptional quality of its wines, declassifying whole vintages (as in 1963 and 1968) when conditions weren’t conducive to the usual high standards of the property. Classified as a 3ème Cru Classé, it punches significantly above its classification. Since the 2017 vintage they are certified 100% biodynamic.. TASTING NOTES. The 2016 Alter Ego de Palmer is a harmonious blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 12% Petit Verdot. Its deep garnet-purple color sets the stage for a fragrant bouquet of black cherries, fresh blackberries and redcurrants, laced with hints of menthol, dark chocolate, cloves, and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, the wine flaunts a lush mid-palate and lively black and red fruit flavors that unfold with a velvety texture. The finish is exceptionally long and satisfying. Reminiscent of the 2010, this wine exudes elegance and refinement, with notes of cassis, spring flowers, spice, and cedar pencil. The introduction of Petit Verdot in the blend since 2011 adds to the wine's aromatic and textural complexity, culminating in a vibrant and energy-filled finish of dark fruit.. FOOD PAIRING. Grilled quail with pomegranate and sumac glaze, paired with a side of bulgur wheat pilaf with dried apricots and pistachios, and roasted baby turnips with honey and thyme or a Pan-seared duck breast with blood orange and star anise sauce, paired with a side of roasted butternut squash and rainbow chard with toasted hazelnuts and sage. FRIARWOOD SAYS. The 2016 Alter Ego de Palmer includes 12% Petit Verdot in its blend, adding a unique depth of flavor to the wine. Petit Verdot was first added to the blend in 2011 and has since become a staple in the recipe, showcasing the innovation and skill of Chateau Palmer's winemaking team.
