The Charming Hermitage Story The Hermitage Hotel has a rich history that dates back to the 1860s when it was originally a boarding house known as The Brookside. During this time it was home to the renowned poet John Keble who resided there in his later years. In 1891 the famous Victorian novelist and poet Thomas Hardy used The Brookside as the setting for a dramatic murder scene in his novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles. The property continued to be a significant landmark in Bournemouth’s history. During the early 1900s The Brookside became the residence of Peter Tuck one of the founders of Bournemouth further adding to its historical importance. By 1928 the property transitioned from a boarding house to a more refined establishment adopting the name The White Hermitage. Over the years it became a well-regarded location for visitors seeking comfort and elegance in Bournemouth. In the 1980s the hotel underwent another transformation and was rebranded as The Hermitage. Over time it experienced several changes in ownership while maintaining its legacy as a premier destination in the region. Today The Hermitage Hotel is proudly owned by Oceana Hotels & Restaurants continuing its tradition of hospitality and excellence.
