Product Description

Charlotte' potatoes are a much-loved second early salad variety, frequently found in supermarkets and holding an RHS AGM for its reliable performance. Enjoy pear-shaped, yellow-skinned, waxy tubers with creamy yellow flesh, offering a first-class flavour whether served hot or cold. For second early crops, planting can commence from March. To prepare, 'chit' the seed potatoes by placing them in a cool, bright spot (around 10°C) to encourage sprouting. When planting in the ground, avoid areas where potatoes have grown for the past two years to minimise disease risk. Choose a sheltered, sunny location with moist, well-drained soil, enriched with plenty of well-rotted manure. Plant in rows spaced 37cm (15") apart, with 75cm (2'6") between rows. Place seed potatoes in 10cm (4") deep trenches and cover with soil.As shoots reach 20cm (8"), mound soil around them, leaving a few centimetres exposed. Repeat this after another 3 weeks. For those with limited space, growing in potato bags on the patio is a great option. Fill an 8-litre potato bag with good quality compost mixed with well-rotted manure, up to just below the top. Carefully insert a single chitted potato, shoots upwards, at a depth of 12cm (5"). Place bags in a sunny spot and water regularly to keep the compost moist.Weed between rows and ensure plants are well-watered throughout the growing season. If frost is a risk, protect stems by drawing soil around them or move potato bags to a frost-free area like a shed or greenhouse. Second early crops can be harvested approximately 13 weeks from planting, when foliage begins to turn yellow and die back.Ideal for patios and kitchen gardens. Tender. Prefers a position in full sun. This Charlotte variety has Organic Certification approved by The Soil Association.
