To combat this, most vehicles come with an intercooler or chargecooler to cool it back down.As with many other things on a car, the factory part represents a compromise and has been designed with stock power levels in mind.Once you start tuning a car and increasing boost levels, or simply driving the car in a harder fashion than originally planned for, the cooling capacity of the original intercooler can start to reach its limits.This is bad because the engine will adjust the power level according to the temperature of the air reaching it. Hotter air reaching the engine will generally see the ECU backing off boost and fuelling to protect the engine.Cooler air will allow the engine to make more power, even with a stock map.On a remapped car, an upgraded intercooler helps ensure you're getting full benefit from your new higher power map and not losing power you've paid for to heat.It's not just about a bigger core though. As an intercooler carries air from the turbo to the engine, any inefficiency in airflow can cause boost lag and delay air making it from the turbo to the engine. Pipework, end-tanks, and core must be carefully designed to avoid turbulence and sized optimally for boost-levels.Through use of features like a bigger core, better core design, and better end-tank and pipework design, Airtec are able to build a much more efficient intercooler that flows better and keeps temperatures lower.On some vehicles, Airtec may allow you to replace the original Top- or Side-mount intercooler with a Front-mount. This is a better mounting location for cooling cores as it gets more airflow.On some vehicles, Airtec may offer multiple sizes of intercooler, according to the level of modification the vehicle has received.
