Bring a touch of the tropics indoors with the Begonia maculata, a striking evergreen houseplant ideal for adding colour and vitality to any modern home or conservatory, all year round. Affectionately known as the 'Trout Begonia' or 'Spotted Begonia', its deep emerald green, heart-shaped leaves are adorned with captivating silver spots on their upper surface, while the undersides reveal a vibrant pink hue.During the summer months, expect a delightful display of delicate white flowers, adding even more visual interest. The Begonia maculata can also be grown outdoors as summer bedding, where its trailing foliage and blooms make a superb addition to hanging baskets or containers.When growing outdoors, ensure warm, frost-free conditions until all risk of frost has passed. Gradually acclimatise the plants to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days before planting in their final positions. Choose a sheltered spot in sun or semi-shade, using multipurpose compost. Alternatively, position the Begonia maculata on a windowsill with bright, indirect light, avoiding strong afternoon sun. Water and feed regularly until well established.
