While their blooms are perfect for cut flower arrangements, remember to leave at least a third of the stem intact to nourish the bulb for the following year.For optimal growth, plant in a location that enjoys either full sun or partial shade - lilies thrive when their roots are shaded and their heads are in the sun. They prefer moist, free-draining soil that ranges from acidic to neutral, enriched with compost or well-rotted manure. When planting in containers, use a loam-based compost such as No. 3. Container-grown lilies should be divided and repotted with fresh compost every other year.Plant the bulbs approximately 15cm apart, at a depth three times their height, as this deep planting helps protect them from excessive heat. Water and feed the plants regularly during the growing season. Deadhead faded flowers where they join the stem to prevent seed pod development. After flowering, reduce watering and move container plants to a frost-free area for the winter.
