Before planting, enrich the soil with plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost. When growing lilies in containers, use a loam-based compost. Plant lily bulbs approximately three times their own height deep and 15cm (6") apart in a sheltered, sunny spot.Feed and water oriental lily bulbs regularly throughout the growing season, keeping them consistently moist. When cutting flowers for indoor arrangements, leave a third of the stem intact to feed the bulb for the following year. Reduce watering and move container-grown lilies to a cool, frost-free position over winter. Apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost in spring.
