These compact chilli plants are perfectly proportioned for sunny kitchen windowsills. Expect a generous harvest of small, delicious red fruits from these neat and tidy plants. Chilli peppers thrive undercover in greenhouses or polytunnels, or outdoors in a sheltered, sunny spot. Smaller varieties also flourish on a bright kitchen windowsill.Pot up young plants and nurture them in warm, frost-free conditions. Once established, transplant them into grow bags, containers, or well-prepared beds with fertile, well-drained soil. When growing outdoors, gradually acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days before transplanting, spacing them 50cm (20") apart.Water regularly throughout the growing season, and once the first fruits appear, feed weekly with a high potash tomato fertiliser. Taller varieties may benefit from staking. Apply a thick mulch of organic matter around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. In greenhouses, maintain high humidity by damping down paths daily.Harvest individual chillies by snipping them from the plant with secateurs, or pull the entire plant when laden with red peppers and hang it upside down in the kitchen for year-round use.
