Most turbocharged/supercharged cars come with a factory intercooler. This works a lot like a radiator with air flowing through the core and shedding heat.Only cool air should come out of the other end. While this is generally adequate for the factory tune, once you start tuning and upgrading an engine you can start making greater demands of the intercooler than it can meet, making it a bottleneck for the whole system.At this point an upgraded item becomes desirable. It's important to choose the right intercooler though. As we're talking about air going into the engine from the turbo, a poorly engineered intercooler can obstruct the flow of air in, adding lag.
